What to Expect From a Professional Road Bike Fit

A professional bike fit takes about 90 minutes and follows a systematic process, not a quick eyeball of your saddle height. The goal isn’t to make you look like a pro — it’s to make the bike disappear underneath you so you can ride longer, faster, and without pain. Here’s exactly what happens, drawn from real fits we’ve done at the shop.

The 7-Step Process

Step 1: Pre-Fit Interview (10–15 minutes)

Before you touch the bike, we talk. What kind of riding do you do? How many hours a week? Any current discomfort or old injuries? What are your goals — comfort, speed, or both? A criterium racer and a weekend endurance rider need different positions. The fit has to match your riding, not an idealised pro position you can’t hold for more than an hour.

Step 2: Physical Assessment (10–15 minutes)

We assess you off the bike first: flexibility, leg length, foot structure, core stability. These physical factors determine what positions your body can actually support. You can’t fit someone into a position their body can’t hold — the bike has to be built around the rider, not the other way around.

Step 3: Cleat Positioning (10–15 minutes)

If you ride clipless, cleat position is the foundation. Too far forward and you overload your calves. Too far back and you lose leverage. Wrong angle and your knees track outward or inward. We set fore-aft position, rotational angle, and stance width to match your natural foot position. Everything upstream — knee, hip, saddle — depends on getting this right.

Step 4: Saddle Height and Setback (15–20 minutes)

This is the core of the fit. Saddle height is set using knee angle measurement and observation of your pedal stroke — hip rocking, heel dropping, dead spots in the rotation. Most riders we see have their saddle too high. It feels powerful in the car park. It destroys your hips on hour three.

Setback — how far the saddle sits behind the bottom bracket — determines your weight distribution between hands and feet. Too far forward and your hands go numb. Too far back and you’re reaching for the bars.

Step 5: Handlebar Reach and Drop (15–20 minutes)

Once your lower body is dialled, we address your upper body. Stem length, bar height, and bar angle determine how much weight goes through your hands and how your shoulders feel after a long ride. For most riders, this is where comfort lives or dies. Small changes — 10mm of stack, 5mm of reach — can transform how a bike feels.

Step 6: Dynamic Assessment (10–15 minutes)

You ride. We watch. Adjustments happen in real time based on what we see in your pedal stroke and what you’re reporting. This back-and-forth is what separates a real fit from a computer-generated one — a fitter’s eye catches things no software will.

Step 7: Follow-Up Session (free, after 2 weeks)

Your body needs time to adapt to a new position. Two weeks after the initial fit, you come back for a 20-minute fine-tune. You’ve ridden. Your body has adjusted. We lock in the last 10%. Most Sydney fitters don’t offer this — we include it because the first session gets you most of the way, and the follow-up makes it permanent.

Real Outcome: Knee Pain Resolved

A customer came in last month — road cyclist, riding about 120 km a week, developing sharp anterior knee pain after 90 minutes on the bike. He’d tried adjusting his saddle height himself based on a YouTube tutorial. The problem wasn’t saddle height at all — his cleats were angled 3 degrees inward, forcing his knees to track outward with every pedal stroke.

We repositioned his cleats to neutral, dropped his saddle 4mm, and adjusted his bar reach by 10mm. Two weeks later at the follow-up: knee pain gone. He’s now riding 150 km a week without discomfort. The fit took 90 minutes and cost $160 — about the same as replacing a chain and cassette, which he’d already done twice trying to solve a problem that was never mechanical.

What Most People Get Wrong About Bike Fits

“I’ll get a fit when something hurts.”

By the time you’re in pain, your body has already adapted to a bad position — and it takes longer to unlearn. A fit is preventive, not reactive. The riders who benefit most are the ones who get fitted before they develop problems.

“A bike fit is just saddle height.”

Saddle height is maybe 30% of a fit. The relationship between your cleats, saddle, and bars is what matters — change one and the others need to move too. A fit that only adjusts your saddle height isn’t a fit.

“Computer-generated fits are more accurate.”

Motion capture is useful data. But a fit is a conversation between rider and fitter — the computer tells you what the numbers say, and the fitter’s eye tells you whether those numbers work for your body. The best fits combine both.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a bike fit take?

A full road bike fit takes about 90 minutes, plus a 20-minute follow-up two weeks later. Anything under 45 minutes is skipping steps.

Will a bike fit make me faster?

It will give you the best opportunity to practice technique and do the necessary work to perfect it. A correct position lets you sustain your existing power for longer because you’re not fighting the bike. Comfort is speed over distance.

Do I need a bike fit if I’ve been riding for years without pain?

You might not need one urgently. But even experienced riders benefit from a check. Saddles slip, cleats wear, hamstrings tighten. An annual Fit/Cleat Check ($60) is a good reset.

Can I get fit on my current bike and transfer it to a new one?

Yes — and it’s smart. A Pre-Purchase Fit ($60) uses your current position to determine what frame size and geometry you need before you spend 3,000–8,000 on the wrong size.
